The rectum is the terminal portion of the large intestine, descending through the posterior pelvis to the anal canal. It is surrounded by the fascia propria recti and supported by the lateral rectal ligaments and the presacral fascia. The inferior hypogastric plexus provides autonomic innervation to all pelvic organs.
