The oesophagus passes through the posterior mediastinum and pierces the diaphragm at the oesophageal hiatus. It is surrounded by a loose fascial sheath — the fascia perioesophagealis — and anchored to the diaphragm by the phrenico-oesophageal membrane. The oesophageal plexus (vagus nerve) runs along its surface and plays a key role in visceral innervation.
