The small intestine — comprising the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum — is suspended from the posterior abdominal wall by the mesentery, a broad fan-shaped peritoneal fold. The root of the mesentery (radix mesenterii) attaches obliquely across the posterior abdominal wall. The mesentery contains the mesenteric vessels, lymphatics, and autonomic nerves.
